My journey into the world of tailoring began in childhood, around the age of eight or nine, guided by my stepmother's skillful hands. Together with my sister, we crafted patchwork dresses, a perfect accompaniment for our family's excursions to bluegrass festivals. This early exposure ignited a lifelong passion for fashion and sewing.
In college, while pursuing business studies, I remained committed to my craft, always ensuring to include a sewing-related class in my schedule. This blend of practical skill and academic learning paved the way for a significant opportunity during my time at JCCC. My tailoring instructor, Gigi Delaney, recognized my potential and referred me to a local establishment, Rick's, where I apprenticed under Lorenzo Kelly, a master tailor, for two years.
My professional path took a significant turn when I became the lead tailor at JoS. A. Bank in Lawrence. In this role, I managed all tailoring responsibilities for the store, a challenging but immensely rewarding experience that lasted five years. The unexpected closure of our store amid the pandemic, though initially a setback, serendipitously led to an exciting new chapter. I acquired the tailoring equipment from our store and embarked on my entrepreneurial journey, launching Sierra’s Tailoring in July 2020.
Since its inception, Sierra's Tailoring has been a culmination of my experiences, including menswear tailoring collaborations with Lebowitz in St. Jo and Todd's and Houndstooth in KC. Working alongside designers and individual clients, I've had the privilege of creating custom garments and small collections, each reflecting the unique personality and style of the wearer.
At Sierra’s Tailoring, the focus extends beyond mere alterations and repairs; it's about instilling confidence and ensuring a perfect fit. Whether it's a simple mend or a complex alteration, my goal is to ensure that each client feels their best in their attire.
